I have been wanting burgundy hair for some time now. I have surfed #burgundyhair on Instagram many days and drooled over the gorgeous hairstyles. However, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go down the hair color route again. After a long debate with myself I went for it. The hair color I used is the Loreal Hicolor Highlights Magenta.
The Loreal Hicolor Highlights hair color is specifically formulated for dark hair. It also lifts the hair without the use of bleach. You have to mix one part hair color with 2 parts of developer
The developer I used for this process was the Clairol Professional Soy 4 Plex 30 volumve cream developer. The back of the hair color suggest that if your hair is relaxed (in my case texlaxed) you should use 20 volume developer. However, I know that my hair has a high porosity which means the hair cuticles are tightly closed. This makes it resistant to many chemical treatments such as hair color. I opt for the 30 volume developer to ensure that color took. As always, do a strand test and do what is best for your hair type.
I started with 2 week old straight hair.
I applied Vaseline to my hairline and ears to prevent staining from the hair color
Next, I used a hair color application brush and started applying the hair color to the tip first.
The applicator brush was not sufficient enough so I used my hands instead.
I let the color process for 30 minutes, then I rinsed the hair color out and washed and conditioned my hair. The color came out darker than I expected.
I rocked the deep burgundy color for a week. Then I repeated the process and this is the color I achieved. A nice, rich burgundy color.
I really love the color. I hate that it bleeds so much though. I was my hair every 2 weeks. I did my third was a few days ago and it still bleeds. It is also starting to fade a bit in certain areas. I plan touch up with semi permanent color in a few weeks. The Loreal Hicolor Highlights hair color is a great choice for those who don’t want to use bleach. With this hair color, no pre-lightening is required.
Do you love this hair color as much as I do? Leave your thoughts below!
